There are 2 types unsupported screen doors which are supported by nothing more than the screen itself and supported screen storm doors which are usually partially supported by the frame of the screen or storm door itself. Unsupported screen doors are recommended for smaller and less aggressive pets only. A pet that is too large or is aggressive is more likely to damage the sensitive screen when trying to enter or leave the house. Partially supported storm doors such as those made by Hale are fastened to the bottom and side of the frame. Of course this means that the unit can only be installed on the bottom left or right hand side of the door. Pet patio doors are also not likely to have locks the logic being that locked doors will encourage your pet to paw or scratch your screen instead.
You can still enjoy high functionality of both bays by moving the screens according to their railings. If your garage doesnt have enough room for sliding screen doors use pull down screens -- just like window shades. The cassette is mounted at the top of the door opening and you can simply pull down the screen all the way to the bottom. My personal favorite is the roll-up screens; they dont use framing and are perfect for combining with other garage door hardware. When I want to have privacy and maximum security I simply close my steel door shut. As soon as I want to work inside my garage I simply open the door and roll down the screen. It also has a zippered opening -- I can walk in and out while the screen is down -- and it is very practical to use. When you dont need the screen door simply roll it up and you are all set; no additional storage space or handlings needed.
Most often retractable models should match the measurements of the exterior jam its being installed in. Sliding patio models should be measured by the size of their panels. It is best to discuss the recommended measurements for your screen door installation needs with a licensed contractor. Proper Installation Traditional models are generally easy to install and can be set to open to the right or left. As for retractable and sliding glass models installation can be a bit trickier. It may involve masonry work drilling cutting track placement track adjustment heavy lifting and more. It is important to carefully follow the manufacturers instructions for installation or hire a handyman capable of doing the job right.
Make sure that the installer has many years experience and has been trained by the manufacturer. It is also important for the screen door company to have a valid contractors license depending on if your state requires it by law. A contractors license usually shows that the company is serious about staying in business for a number of years and it is protection for the consumer. Finally the service and warranty claims of the screen door company should also be taken into consideration. If there is a lifetime warranty on the parts excluding the screen material then who will service the screen door if a component breaks.
